Fornacetta Church

This church is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary, but it is also known simply with the name of the area that surrounds it: the 'Fornacetta'. Located outside Porta Macchiaia, this church was a point of reference for the surrounding towns. The road to the right leads to the jasper mines where the red stones that adorn the Royal Chapel of San Lorenzo in Florence were mined.

The Fornacetta church contains an exquisite ancient organ, restored in the nineteenth century by Giuseppe Bonaccorsi, of whom a marble bust can be found inside the church and who was later buried in the sacristy. In the coffin there is a parchment with the story of his life.
