Porta Macchiaia

This gate had two names: Latria and Macchiaia. Latria because it led to the Latriani area and Macchiaia because it faces north toward the woods (macchie) on the Apennines

In 1437 it was heavily damaged along with the entire length of the castle walls that once surrounded the village on this side up to Borgo Gate by the Milanese and Lucchese troops under the comand of the valiant captain Niccolò Piccinino. On the left side of the door you can still see the remains of a watchtower.
