The statue is the work of sculptor Raffaello Romanelli. Giovanni Pascoli gave the inaugural speech when it was unveiled
At the bottom of the square called "il Fosso" (in memory of the ditch that used to pass through there) is a raised semicircular area with grass-covered steps, on top of which a statue was erected in 1905 in honour of Antonio Mordini, a Risorgimento politician and Minister of Public Works in 1869.
